"Good Luck"

How many times have you said or been told something like "good luck in the woods this afternoon" or "best of luck on your charter fishing trip next week"? I am certainly guilty of flippantly throwing "luck" around, but recently it has bothered me. Do Christian outdoorsmen really put stock in luck, believing that this is what makes our outings successful?

Luck is defined as "a belief in good or bad fortune in life caused by accident or chance which happens beyond a person's control." However, scripture supports that the providence of God is more than able to match and exceed the luck of the world. "Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us" (Ephesians 3:20). Realizing this, we should no longer knowingly take credit away from the Lord Jesus Christ for our success by attributing our "trophies" to luck. Doing that could give others the impression that they should seek something or someone other than the Lord for true prosperity and true success (Stewart 2000). Instead of wishing luck to a fellow hunter or fishermen, from now on let's consider saying, "God bless you". - GE
